CHAPTER TWENTY

OLIVIA

Olivia trembled as she tried to hook Flora’s car seat into the base. The plastic latches kept slipping out of the hooks and when she tried to steady it with her hand too close to the mechanism, she pinched her finger in the metal bit and shouted, spooking Flora.

Charlie appeared behind her, gently moving Olivia out of the way. “Hate these things…” she murmured. Then, soothing Flora with her pacifier, Charlie slipped the car seat into the base with a click.

Olivia nodded thanks, then shakily climbed into the driver’s seat. Charlie climbed in a second later, and for a long moment, they sat there in heavy silence.

Released. Olivia couldn’t wrap her head around it, but couldn’t imagine why that Angela person would lie. Did that mean her mother was…cured?

“You were barely gone twenty minutes, so it either went very well or very badly,” Charlie said. “I’m assuming badly, judging by the way that muscle in your forearm is dancing.”

“She’s not here,” Olivia said.

Charlie frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I mean exactly what I said.” Olivia took a breath. In through the nose, out through the mouth, just like in birthing class. “She was released.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“And they didn’t think that was something you needed to know?”

Olivia shook her head.

“Well do you know where she went?”

“No,” Olivia lied. “I have no idea.”
